Freedom Schools National Training
Every summer, 8 – 11 One Common Unity trainers help prepare Children’s Defense Fund teachers by providing them with hands on and theory based approaches to Innovative Peace Education techniques in the classroom. Yearly, our diverse training team is galvanized and assembled at the Alex Haley Farm in Tennessee. Over the course of 7 - 10 days, One Common Unity trainers facilitate over 80 workshops that expose approximately 1,300 Freedom School teachers to the principles of Peace Education in the classroom. Some of these workshops and trainings include: The Pedagogy of Peace, Nonviolent Communication, Integrative Conflict Transformation, Forgiveness and Compassion, and Music Therapy.
“The CDF Freedom Schools program provides critical summer and after-school enrichment through a model curriculum that supports children and families around five essential components: high quality academic enrichment, parent and family involvement, civic engagement and social action, inter-generational leadership development, and nutrition, health and mental health.”
The CDF Freedom School sites offer a unique vision of education, rooted in the cultural traditions of literacy, service, and advocacy.
The five essential components of successful CDF Freedom Schools program are:
- High Quality Academic Enrichment
- Parent and Family Involvement
- Civic Engagement and Social Action
- Inter-generational Leadership Development
- Nutrition, Health and Mental Health
Through our work with the Children’s Defense Fund, One Common Unity has emerged into the field of staff development, team-building, innovative peace education trainings and health and wellness.
