Jean-Jacques was born the last child of a magical mother and a powerful painter. His first years in Haiti were filled with color, kite flying, shoeless foot races, sugarcane, nightly serenades to the moon, storytelling and untold hours painting in his father’s studio. He continued the wide-eyed wonder and creativity of his ever-growing childhood shifted to the northeast USA.
Baba Ras D, which means “Father of Kings and Queens” is one of One Common Unity’s most veteran facilitators. From 2003 – 2007 he directed our Revel Youth Shine youth program, designed to keep young men and women between the ages of 7 – 25 years of age engaged in positive self, family, and community oriented activities through music.
Since opening his first restaurant in 1985, Andy Shallal has reveled in the role of host— first in Annandale, Virginia and then in Washington DC. His first DC restaurant was Skewers, specializing in Lebanese and Middle Eastern fare at the top of the steps at 1633 P Streets NW.
Colman McCarthy, born in 1938, is an American journalist, teacher, lecturer, pacifist, anarchist and long-time peace activist. From 1969 to 1997, he wrote columns for The Washington Post. His topics ranged from politics, religion, health, and sports to education, poverty, and peacemaking.
David Foreman, aka ‘Jali-D,’ is an accomplished percussionist and spoken word artist who simultaneously combines his talents into an art form he calls “Rappercussions.” His intelligent and creative rhymes have entertained and educated both children and adults nationwide.
Dreamer, Founder and Caretaker of Java Green Coffee & Tea Inc., DJ Kim is interested in nature, life, and peace and harmony for all beings. One of the key leaders of the green movement in DC, DJ is still active in many organizations he helped found, including One Common Unity and Live Green.
